GOODWILL MESSAGE TO ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS OF OSUSTECH BY THE VICE-CHANCELLOR

The remarkable achievements of Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa in the first year of its existence could not be easily quantified.

The Executive Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko on 27th September, 2010 inaugurated a new Governing Council under the leadership of Professor Funso Akere. Mr. Governor stated clearly that a world-class University is desirable for Ondo State with focus on Science and Technology where graduates will become employers of labour instead of job seekers.
  
The University has since grown from strength to strength with the support of the Governor and Government of Ondo State, Governing Council, Senate, Staff and entire students of OSUSTECH. We thank God for the historic first session coming to an end on 30th September, 2011.

I appeal to all staff and students of OSUSTECH to renew their energy towards greater academic attainments in the future.

The University of Sheffield, U.K. had on Thursday, 21st July, 2011 conferred on Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, MD, Ph.D the prestigious Doctor of Science degree (Honoris Causa).  The award was in recognition of Prof. Odugbemi’s outstanding contributions to Science and the advancement of knowledge.
At the colourful ceremony, the eminent professor of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology was highly celebrated in the presence of distinguished scholars from all over the world. Among the notable names at the ceremony from Nigeria are the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, (OSUSTECH) Okitipupa, Prof. Funso Akere, FNAL, Prof. Wole Atoyebi, Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos and Prof. Wole Famuyiwa of the Dept. of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, wife of the awardee, Chief (Mrs) Titi Odugbemi and other family members.

 

New Beginning as OSUSTECH Senate is Inaugurated.

The Senate of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) Okitipupa has been formally inaugurated. The inauguration was held at a brief and colourful special sitting of Senate held on Wednesday, 8th June, 2011 in the Senate Chambers at the take-off site of the University in Okitipupa. In his opening address at the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, congratulated Senate members for being part of history and noted that their actions and decisions at the Senate would go a long way in determining the success of all academic programmes in the University. The Vice-Chancellor also enumerated the laudable programmes achieved by the University since the Governing Council was inaugurated by the Ondo State Governor and Visitor to the University, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko on 27th September, 2010. Earlier at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor lauded the efforts of the Governor and Government of Ondo State for the support the University has received so far. The Senate therefore, as its first assignment, considered and approved the 1st semester examination results for 2010/2011 session of the pioneer students. The Senate also approved the draft   2010/2011 Academic Calendar brought before it from the Faculty of Science and which was presented by the Ag. Dean, Prof. (Mrs) O. A. Magbagbeola.

The Senate also noted the submission of the Vice-chancellor that the University, apart from teaching, research and service, will also involve students in entrepreneurship programme. Towards this end, a Centre for Entrepreneurship and Leadership Training has been established. The University will also establish beneficial and productive partnership / linkages with reputable institutions within and outside the country.
OSUSTECH embarks on staff capacity building to aid optimal service delivery

The Ondo State University of Science and Technology, (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa had concluded its first staff training and development programme held at the University temporary site, Okitipupa between Monday 9th and Friday, 13th May, 2011.
 In his opening remark at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, emphasised the need for constant training and retraining of all staff for efficient and effective service delivery. He reiterated the University’s determination in ensuring that capacity building is given adequate attention in the institution. The aim of the capacity building workshop/staff training programme according to the Vice-chancellor, is to give proper orientation to the old and newly recruited staff of the institution with a view to positioning them for optimal service delivery. Seasoned and Professional University Administrators served as resource persons at the training workshop.

Some of the topics addressed during the training include:

  • Communication and Human Relations in the workplace
  • Advance Computer Skills
  • Safety and Security Measures in the workplace
  • Work Ethics
  • Interpersonal Relationship at work
  • Succession planning for Effective Management
  • Motivation and job Appraisal
  • Planning for retirement

In attendance at the occasion were the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, the Registrar, Mr. W. J. Ekundayo, the University Librarian, Mr. J.A. Adeyomoye, and other academic, administrative and technical staff of the University.

NDDC donates 375KVA Perkins generator to OSUSTECH

The University has taken delivery of a - 375KVA Perkins generator donated by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). At the formal handing-over ceremony held in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria, the Managing Director of the Commission, Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha explained that the donation was a demonstration of the Commission’s commitment to encourage teaching and research in the state- owned Universities located in the Niger Delta region of the country.The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, was represented at the ceremony by the Ag. Head, Department of Biological Sciences of the University, Dr. Adegoke Adegbite.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor had in a letter personally signed by him, expressed appreciation on behalf of the University for the donation and solicited for more collaborative efforts between the Commission and the University.

The Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa on Thursday 3rd March, 2011 matriculated its pioneer students at the University temporary site in Okitipupa. The students, 98 in number, were admitted into four departments namely: Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences. The Governor of Ondo State and Visitor to the University, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko stated that the institution was built on a high moral plane and would place zero tolerance on all vices.
He assured that although the University is taking off on a temporary site, encumbrances on the development of the permanent site would soon become part of history as work was progressing on the site according to the plan saying that "in no distant time, we would have substantially realised our goals in this regard.” According to the Governor, "Ours is a commitment to the development of a University that is globally competitive, modern and sustainable. We desire to once again put Ondo State on the world academic map and render the message unequivocally, that amongst us rests merit and excellence.”
An important highlight of the occasion was the First Inaugural lecture of the University titled “Medicinal Plants in Nigeria: Research and Reminiscences“ delivered by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, MD, PhD, FRCPath, PNMC, FAS, NNOM, OON. In  his paper, the eminent Professor of Biological Sciences highlighted some of the medicinal plants found in Nigeria and their usefulness and challenged researchers to develop interest in this relatively new area of research. This according to him, will assist in development of new drugs to combat various diseases. In his concluding statement, “the University is determined to ensure that our students are employable after graduating, therefore practicals, fieldwork, entrepreneurship will be emphasized and opportunity to explore possible areas of cooperation/joint research with state, national and international institutions of repute.“ 

Dignitaries present at the historic event include the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and the First lady of Ondo State - Mrs Olukemi Mimiko (middle). At the Governor’s right were the Olugbo of Ugbo, H.R.M. Oba Frederick Akinruntan who is the Chancellor and Prof. Funso Akere, the Chairman of the University Governing Council. To the left side of the Governor’s wife were the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi and the University Registrar, Mr. W. J. Ekundayo.

Other distinguished guests present to grace the occasion include members of the University Governing Council, Royal fathers-the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, H.R.M. Oba (Dr.) Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo Jilo III, the Abodi of Ikale-land, H.R.M. Oba George Faduyile (JP), Jegun of Idepe, H.R.M. Oba Michael Adetoye Obatuga (JP), representative of the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Z.D Adeyewa, distinguished Professors from other Universities, the wife of the Vice-chancellor , Chief (Mrs) Titi Odugbemi , the Permanent secretary Ministry of Education , Mrs Taiwo Kolawole, other top government functionaries, gentlemen and ladies of the press, parents of the matriculants and friends of the University.

OSUSTECH orientation programme for newly-admitted Students

The Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa had just concluded an orientation programme for the newly-admitted students for the 2010/2011 academic session. The orientation took place at temporary site of the University in Okitipupa on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd February, 2011. While declaring the orientation programme open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, congratulated the new students and described them as “privileged” because they were selected from the numerous candidates that applied for admission. The Vice-Chancellor also congratulated the students for the opportunity of having access to the State-of-the-Art equipment and facilities as well as highly qualified and competent academic staff that would give the best scientific training comparable to other notable institutions in the world.

He emphasized the importance of character development as a vital ingredient of learning and warned them to shun cultism and other social vices. The Vice-Chancellor also cautioned the new intakes to be wary of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and in particular HIV/AIDS. Some of the other topics covered during the two-day orientation programme include the Vision, Mission and Core Values of OSUSTECH, Cultism, Course Registration and Computation of Academic Grades, Introduction to Bursary Services, Introduction to Library Services, OSUSTECH Edu-Portal Services, among others.

Also present during the ceremony were the University Registrar, Mr. W. J. Ekundayo, the University Librarian, Mr. J.A. Adeyomoye, the Ag. Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. (Mrs.) Olubunmi Magbagbeola, the Ag. HOD, Biological Sciences, Dr. A. Adegbite, Chief Medical Director-State Specialist Hospital, Okitipupa, Dr. R.O. Adesoji and other senior Academic and Administrative staff.

 

 OSUSTECH gets new Vice-Chancellor
The Ondo State Government has announced the appointment of Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS as the Vice-Chancellor of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa.
