Professor Akinbo Akinwumi Adesomoju assumed office as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa on September I, 2008. He had earlier served as the first Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the new University from the 6th of March, 2008 to the 31st of August, 2008.
Before coming to OSUSTECH, Professor Adesomoju had been Professor of Chemistry at the University of Ibadan, where he had served for 33 years. He has had a distinguished career in natural product chemistry during which time he had been involved in the isolation and structural determination of compounds of possible medicinal, biological or technical importance from natural sources. He had also been involved in environmental studies and had been consultant on many environmental projects including FEPA/WORLD BANK projects on development of State Environmental Action Plans and UNDP project on HDI report on the Niger Delta.
Professor Adesomoju was very actively involved in various administrative duties at the University of Ibadan in addition to teaching and research. He was a member of numerous statutory and ad-hoc committees and held many positions of responsibility at the University including the following: Dean, Faculty of Science; John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Grant Liaison Officer; Chairman, Committee of Hall Wardens; Warden, Independence Hall; Member, University Senate; Member, Appointment and Promotion Committee; Member, Students’ Welfare Board; Member, Junior Staff Appointment and Promotion Committee. He won ‘Best Lecturer of the Year’ and ‘Best Warden of the Year’ awards from his students several times among many other awards. He was conferred with the University of Ibadan ‘Distinguised Alumnus’ award in 2008.
Some other positions of responsibility held by Professor Adesomoju at various times include: Member, Governing Council, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Editor, Nigerian Journal of Science; Director, Nigeria Sugar Company, Bacita; Member, Chemical Information Network Committee of Industrial Training Fund of Nigeria, and Director, Ondo State Housing Corporation.
He was Visiting Scientist: Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, U.S.A (1981-1982) and (July to September 1983 and 1984), Visiting Senior Scientist: Department of Chemistry, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, U.S.A., (1985-1986), and Visiting Professor, Sheda Science and Technology Complex, Sheda, (2001 to December 2004).
He has supervised or co- supervised over fifty M.Sc and Ph.D dissertations. Professor Adesomoju has authored or co-authored numerous peer reviewed scientific papers and made many presentations at national and international conferences and seminars. He has served as external examiner in chemistry to many universities. He is a member of various professional bodies including, Science Association of Nigeria; Chemical Society of Nigeria and Nigeria Society of Pharmacognosy.
Professor Adesomoju was born on the 24th of May 1948 at Araromi-Seaside in Ilaje Local Government area of Ondo State, Nigeria. He had his primary education at the Local Authority Primary School, Araromi-Seaside. He subsequently attended Manuwa Memorial Grammar School, Iju-Odo and Ijebu-Ode Grammar School for his secondary education (1960-66). Professor Adesomoju had his undergraduate education at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He had his graduate education at the University of Bristol, England and the University of Ibadan, Nigeria with a PhD in Chemistry in 1977. He was a recipient of Government Scholarship for his secondary Education, Western Nigeria Cocoa Marketing Board Scholarship for his undergraduate education, Rockefeller Foundation Grant and British Inter-University Grant for his postgraduate education.
